History (Part 1)

Madison, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 when federal judge James Duane Doty purchased the isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona, successfully lobbying for the undeveloped wilderness to become the capital of the new Wisconsin Territory. The city grew rapidly after Wisconsin achieved statehood in 1848, which also marked the establishment of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Indigenous Roots
Long before European settlement, the isthmus was home to the Ho-Chunk people, who called the area Taychopera or Dejope, translating to "land of four lakes". They built effigy mounds throughout the region, many of which are still preserved on the university campus and in local parks.

History (Part 2)

The 20th Century: Fires, Architecture, and Industry
Capitol Fire: The original territorial capitol was replaced in 1863, but the second building burned down in a devastating 1904 fire. The current iconic granite capitol, standing 284 feet tall, was completed in 1917 and remains the tallest building in Madison due to local height restrictions.

Progressivism & Industry: The early 1900s transformed Madison into the birthplace of the "Wisconsin Idea"—a progressive philosophy that university research should influence and improve state government. Alongside academics and government, the city developed a robust industrial base, with companies like Oscar Mayer becoming major regional employers.
Frank Lloyd Wright: Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who was born in Wisconsin, proposed a distinct civic center for Madison in 1938. After decades of debate, his vision was finally realized in 1997 with the opening of the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center overlooking Lake Monona.

Counterculture and Modern Identity
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Madison became a vibrant focal point for the American anti-Vietnam War movement and student activism. State Street—a pedestrian-only mall connecting the university to the Capitol Square—became a center for rallies, local commerce, and counterculture.
Today, Madison balances its identity as a powerhouse research university, the seat of state government, and a center for progressive politics. It is heavily known for its extensive park systems and is home to the Dane County Farmers' Market
